1.000 Yen (Issued 1984-1993)

The 1984 issue of the one-thousand yen note represented a significant modernisation of Japanese paper currency, introduced as part of the Bank of Japan’s broader programme to update its banknote series with enhanced security features and refined engraving standards. Issued during a period of considerable economic confidence in Japan, this note circulated widely throughout the late 1980s and into the early 1990s, coinciding with the height of Japan’s post-war economic expansion. The series carried forward a tradition of honouring distinguished figures from Japanese cultural and intellectual history, lending the note a strong sense of national identity. It remained in active circulation for nearly a decade before subsequent series were introduced.

On the front, the dominant feature is an intaglio-engraved portrait of Natsume Soseki, one of Japan’s most celebrated novelists and widely regarded as a defining literary figure of the Meiji era, positioned to the right-hand side of the note. The portrait is rendered with exceptional engraving precision, capturing his characteristic moustache, formal dark suit, and composed, slightly turned expression with fine crosshatching and tonal gradation typical of high-quality intaglio printing. The overall colour scheme of the front is a restrained grey-green palette with soft olive tones throughout the background. To the left of centre, a large ornate guilloché rosette design houses Japanese script characters reading the denomination in kanji, surrounded by intricate lathe-work patterns in multiple overlapping layers. Above this central motif, Japanese script text identifying the Bank of Japan as the issuing authority spans across the upper portion of the note. A red seal with further Japanese script characters appears towards the lower centre of the note, providing an additional layer of official authentication. The serial number ZA668815C appears twice in black ink — once in the upper right area and once along the lower right — printed in a clear, upright typeface. The numeral 1000 appears prominently in the upper right corner in bold dark typography. Fine micro-printed borders and interlocking geometric guilloche patterns frame the entire design, and small Japanese script text runs along the lower margin identifying the printing authority.

The reverse presents a striking and finely engraved scene featuring two red-crowned cranes — known in Japan as tancho — depicted in a courtship dance pose, wings fully extended, set against a misty, softly rendered landscape background. The cranes are positioned symmetrically on either side of a large central oval watermark space, their outstretched wings creating a graceful, balanced composition executed in detailed intaglio engraving with fine feather detail clearly visible. The colour palette on the reverse is a cool blue-grey and pale olive-green combination, giving the scene an atmospheric, wintry quality. The text NIPPON GINKO is printed in bold Latin script across the upper portion of the reverse, with the denomination 1000 YEN appearing in the lower left in clear upright lettering. A red rectangular seal with Japanese script characters is printed towards the lower right of the central oval area. To the left side of the note, an intricate circular guilloché pattern provides an additional geometric security element, while fine lathe-work border patterns run along both the left and right edges of the note, completing the overall design with characteristic precision.
