1.000 Yen (Issued 1993-2004)

A finely engraved portrait of Natsume Soseki, the celebrated Meiji-era novelist and one of Japan’s most revered literary figures, dominates the right-hand side of this 1,000 Yen banknote, rendered in deep blue-grey intaglio printing that gives his likeness a commanding three-dimensional presence. His distinctive moustache, formal dark jacket, and composed expression are captured with the precision characteristic of Japanese banknote engraving. The overall palette of the note is a restrained blue-grey and olive tone, lending it an austere, authoritative appearance consistent with the Nippon Ginko series.

On the front, the portrait of Natsume Soseki occupies the right portion of the note, engraved in fine detail against a lightly patterned background of pale geometric hatching. To the left of centre sits a prominent circular guilloché medallion framed by elaborate rosette and lathe-work patterns, within which Japanese script text is printed, reading as the denomination in kanji characters. A second, smaller circular seal element below this central medallion carries a red stamped official seal in kanji script. The issuing authority name appears in Japanese script text — running horizontally across the upper left area — identifying the Bank of Japan. The denomination numeral “1000” appears in large bold figures at the upper right corner, and the serial number “PF 352699D” is printed twice in black — once at the upper left and once at the lower right — in a clean serif typeface. Small Latin-alphabet text appears at the lower centre of the note, identifying the printing authority. The background guilloché work extends across the entire face of the note in delicate wave and scroll patterns, rendered in muted olive-green and grey tones that provide an intricate anti-counterfeiting substrate beneath all printed elements.

The reverse presents a striking composition of two red-crowned cranes — known in Japan as tancho — standing face to face in a mirrored arrangement, their wings spread wide in a display posture. The birds are engraved with exceptional detail, their white plumage, black wing feathers, and the characteristic red crown markings all clearly delineated. The cranes are set against a pale, lightly shaded background suggesting a misty landscape, with a large blank oval watermark zone at the centre between them. The text “NIPPON GINKO” is printed in bold capital Latin letters across the upper portion of the reverse, and the denomination “1000” appears in the upper right corner with “1000 YEN” printed in bold at the lower left. A red circular seal printed in kanji script appears to the lower right of centre, matching the official seal style seen on the front. To the far left, a geometric diamond-and-circle pattern in blue and yellow provides additional decorative and security interest. The overall tonal palette of the reverse is a cool blue-grey with soft green undertones, consistent with the front face.
