1 Yen Yen (Issued 1946)
Issued under the authority of the Allied Occupation forces following Japan’s surrender in 1945, this one yen note stands as a direct material record of one of the most consequential transitions in modern Japanese history — the moment when external military administration replaced the sovereign instruments of the Japanese state. Rather than celebrating Japanese cultural heritage through portraiture or architectural imagery, the note’s design reflects the functional, administrative character of occupation governance, prioritising clarity of denomination and legal authority over national symbolism. The absence of traditional Japanese iconography speaks volumes about the period: this was currency issued not by Japan, but for Japan, by a foreign military command. It represents a brief but transformative chapter in the country’s monetary history, one that preceded the restoration of full Japanese economic sovereignty in the early 1950s.
On the front, the note is dominated by a striking combination of aquamarine and teal guilloché wave patterning that fills the entire central field, creating an undulating, layered background of fine machine-engraved lines in varying tones of blue and green. Across the top edge, the words “MILITARY CURRENCY” are printed in bold serif capital letters within a dark rectangular panel framed by an ornate engraved border. The border itself runs around all four sides of the note, composed of detailed scroll and filigree engraving in dark olive-green and black, with corner flourishes adding visual weight at each angle. On the left-hand side, an elaborate oval cartouche is engraved in dark ink, containing Japanese script characters rendered in green, surrounded by decorative scrollwork reminiscent of classical Western banknote engraving tradition. At the bottom of this cartouche, additional Japanese script text appears in green. Centrally placed across the face of the note, two large Japanese script characters are printed prominently in green, reading the denomination in Japanese. To the right of centre, the numeral “1” appears in large green print, and at the bottom of the central field, the denomination text “ONE YEN” is printed in bold green serif capitals. A serial number, A18601237A, is printed in bold black sans-serif typeface across the mid-section of the note, flanked by the prefix and suffix letter “A”. The word “SERIES” and the number “100” appear in small text near the lower right of the central panel. At the very bottom centre, within the ornate border, a panel contains Japanese script text in white against a dark background, indicating the issuing military authority. A watermark impression of a triangle or geometric shape is faintly visible within the guilloché field beneath the serial number.
The reverse is printed in a warm reddish-brown ink on cream-coloured paper and features a large, elaborately engraved central decorative motif composed of acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage, and classical ornamental flourishes rendered in fine intaglio line work. The central design element is a bold, curling acanthus scroll that unfurls across most of the composition, surrounded by oak leaves, berry clusters, and intertwining botanical forms, all executed with museum-quality engraving detail that gives the design a sculptural, three-dimensional quality. The border on the reverse is formed by a repeated geometric dot-and-rule pattern along the left-hand side and top edge, with finer rule lines completing the frame on the remaining sides. In the upper right corner of the reverse, Japanese script text appears in white lettering against the brown background, running in a horizontal line and referring to the military proclamation under which the currency was issued. Along the bottom edge of the note, within a rectangular panel framed by ornamental flourishes including small star or asterisk motifs on either side, the text “ISSUED PURSUANT TO MILITARY PROCLAMATION” is printed in bold brown serif capital letters against a lighter background, providing the legal basis for the note’s circulation.
