100 Yen Yen (Issued 1946)

In the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, Japan’s economy lay in ruins, with industrial production collapsed, supply chains severed, and the country under Allied Occupation authority. The American-led occupation administration required a functioning monetary instrument to facilitate the movement of goods, services, and military expenditure across the occupied territories. Currency issued under military proclamation served as the practical medium for transactions ranging from reconstruction procurement to civilian commerce during this extraordinary transitional period. This 100 Yen note of 1946 stands as a direct artefact of that occupation economy, circulating at a time when Japan’s monetary sovereignty had been temporarily superseded by Allied command.

On the front, the note is printed predominantly in shades of blue and green against a pale background, with an intricate guilloché pattern of fine wavy lines filling the central field, giving the note its characteristic security texture. The denomination is prominently stated in large dark blue serif capital lettering reading “ONE HUNDRED” stacked centrally, with “YEN” printed beneath it in matching typeface. Japanese script characters for one hundred yen appear directly below the English text, rendered in bold blue ink at the centre of the note. To the left, the numeral “100” is printed in bold dark blue at the lower corner, and a matching “100” appears within a decorative oval cartouche at the right side of the note, framed by a finely engraved geometric border. The serial number “A01396389A” is printed twice in dark blue ink — once to the left of centre and once to the right — flanking the central denomination text. A large stylised letter “A” appears beneath the central denomination block, serving as a series identifier. The text “SERIES 100” is printed in small capitals in the upper left area and is repeated near the lower right. Along the very bottom of the note, the words “MILITARY CURRENCY” are printed in small capital letters, clearly identifying the issuing authority. The border of the note is composed of elaborate engraved foliate and scrollwork ornamentation in green, framing the entire face. The upper portion features additional decorative panels with geometric and floral engraved motifs. No portrait appears on this note; the design is entirely typographic and ornamental.

The reverse is printed in a warm olive-green tone throughout, featuring a bold central vignette of a highly ornate engraved floral and foliate design, depicting symmetrical acanthus-style leaves and elaborate botanical scrollwork radiating from a central stem arrangement. Four large decorative corner flourishes, each composed of stylised leaf and flower forms, anchor the composition at each corner of the note. The surrounding field is filled with a dense fine-line guilloché background pattern that provides depth and anti-counterfeiting texture. Along the top of the reverse, within a ruled decorative border, the text “ISSUED PURSUANT TO MILITARY PROCLAMATION” is printed in bold capital letters, clearly establishing the legal and military authority under which this currency was circulated. At the lower centre of the reverse, a line of Japanese script characters is printed horizontally, describing in the original language the same military proclamation authority referenced in the English inscription above. The overall printing on the reverse is precise and deeply inked, with the botanical vignette displaying considerable engraving detail in the rendering of each leaf and petal form.
