Japanese Yen Banknotes & Coins We Accept

To exchange your Japanese Yen for cash, select the coins or banknotes you want to add to your account below.

About Japanese Yen Exchange

The Japanese Yen (JPY) is the official currency of Japan and one of the most widely traded currencies in the world. We accept all denominations of Japanese Yen banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Japanese Yen Banknotes

Japan’s current banknotes are issued by the Bank of Japan and circulate in a range of denominations, including the 10,000 yen note and the 5,000 yen note, alongside smaller values covering everyday use. The notes feature sophisticated security elements including holograms and watermarks, making them straightforward to verify. We accept all current denominations, whatever the mix you bring back from your travels.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we also buy older and withdrawn Japanese Yen banknotes, including the 10,000 yen note issued in 1958 and historic low-denomination notes such as the 1 yen banknote first issued in 1885. As long as a note is at least 50% intact, we can make you an offer, though rates for old or damaged notes may be slightly lower than for current issues.

Japanese Yen Coins

We accept a wide range of Japanese Yen coins, including the 500 yen coin and smaller denominations such as the 10 yen coin. Coins tend to attract a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to the additional handling involved, but there is no need to leave them behind after your trip to Japan.

Japanese Yen Exchange FAQ

Do you accept the 2,000 yen note? It seems quite rare.

Yes, we do accept the 2,000 yen note. It was issued in 2000 to mark the G8 Summit held in Okinawa and the new millennium, but it never circulated widely and is seldom seen in everyday use in Japan — so many travellers are surprised to find one in their change. You can exchange it along with any other yen notes you have.

Can I send in a mixture of Japanese Yen banknotes and coins together?

Yes, absolutely. Simply box up your banknotes and coins together and post them to us yourself. Once we receive and verify everything, we will pay you within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you are unhappy with our offer, we will return your currency free of charge.

Do you accept very old Japanese Yen banknotes, such as pre-war or early post-war issues?

Yes, we do. We have exchange pages for a number of historic Japanese Yen notes, including issues dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Older notes are assessed individually, and rates will reflect their age and condition, but as long as a note is at least 50% intact we are happy to make an offer. If you are unsure about a particular note, feel free to contact us before sending.

Will UK banks exchange my leftover Japanese Yen coins?

No — UK banks will not exchange foreign coins, and most travel money services only deal in banknotes. We are happy to buy your Japanese Yen coins, including the high-value 500 yen coin, so there is no need to write them off when you get home from Japan.

I am travelling around Asia and also have currencies like Chinese Yuan or South Korean Won — can you exchange those too?

Yes! We exchange a wide range of Asian currencies alongside Japanese Yen, including Chinese Yuan and South Korean Won. You can send multiple currencies in the same parcel, and we will assess each one and make you a combined offer.
