1 Penny Jersey (Issued 1994)

The one-penny coin is the smallest everyday denomination of the Jersey pound, which is issued by the Bailiwick of Jersey and kept at par with sterling. It was struck in bronze, later copper-plated steel, giving it a warm reddish-brown tone and a light, familiar feel much like the British penny. Its round format and plain edge suited it to constant small change.

On the obverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, surrounded by the legend “QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND” with the date “1994” below.

On the reverse, part of Jersey’s definitive series of island landmarks, appears Le Hocq Tower, one of the round coastal defence towers built along the Jersey shore, shown standing on its rocky base above the sea. The legend “BAILIWICK OF JERSEY” curves above and “ONE PENNY” below.
