50 Pence Jersey (Issued 1997)
The fifty-pence coin is a higher everyday denomination of the Jersey pound, issued by the Bailiwick of Jersey and held at par with the British fifty-pence piece. It was struck in cupro-nickel with a silvery finish and the familiar seven-sided, equal-curved heptagonal shape and smooth edge that make it instantly recognisable.
On the obverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, surrounded by the legend “QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND” with the date below.
On the reverse, from Jersey’s definitive series of island landmarks, appears Grosnez Castle, the ruined medieval castle on the island’s north-western cliffs, shown as its surviving pointed gateway arch and broken walls on the rocky ground. “BAILIWICK OF JERSEY” curves above and “FIFTY PENCE” below.
