This 20 Shillings coin is a current circulation issue dated 2018 and part of Kenya’s wildlife-themed series. It is bimetallic, formed of a brass plated steel centre within a nickel plated steel ring, giving it a two-tone appearance. The coin is round, weighs 8.94 g and measures 25.98 mm across, making it one of the larger everyday denominations. It remains in circulation today.
The obverse shows the coat of arms of Kenya, with a legend on the outer ring. The lettering reads “REPUBLIC OF KENYA 2018 HARAMBEE JAMHURI YA KENYA”, which translates as “All pull together. Republic of Kenya.”
The reverse features the head of an African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) facing right. The surrounding lettering reads “TWENTY SHILLINGS 20 KENYA · SHILINGI ISHIRINI ·”, the Swahili “SHILINGI ISHIRINI” translating as “Twenty shillings.”
