5 Shilingi / Shillin Shilling (Issued 1969-1973)
Printed on paper that carries the warm, slightly aged tone characteristic of early post-independence East African currency production, this five-shilling note from the Central Bank of Kenya presents in a predominantly brown and mauve colour palette that speaks immediately to the printing conventions of the late 1960s. The note has a compact, modest format consistent with low-denomination issues of the period, and its paper retains a firmness that reflects the quality expected of a newly established central bank keen to project institutional confidence. The overall colouration, a rich reddish-brown through to softer mauve tones, is consistent across both faces, giving the note a cohesive visual identity that was deliberate in its design.
On the front, the dominant feature is a detailed portrait of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the First President of Kenya, positioned to the left of centre and rendered in finely engraved intaglio, capturing the texture of his features with considerable precision. The portrait is framed by the surrounding text, which identifies him explicitly: “THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF KENYA MZEE JOMO KENYATTA” is printed clearly beneath the central guilloché medallion. At the top of the note, the bilingual issuing authority is stated as “BANKI KUU YA KENYA” in Swahili above “CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA” in English, with the legend “LEGAL TENDER FOR FIVE SHILLINGS” immediately below. The Swahili denomination “SHILINGI TANO” is printed prominently in large capitals, with “FIVE SHILLINGS” appearing again in English beneath the central ornamental panel. The serial number A/30 342556 appears twice — once in the upper right and once in the lower left — printed in reddish-brown numerals. Two manuscript signatures appear at the lower centre, one attributed to the Governor and one to a Member of the Board of Directors, with “FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS” printed above them. The date “1st JULY, 1969.” is printed to the lower right of the signature panel. The numeral “5” appears in each of the four corners, and the entire composition is framed by a border of interlaced guilloché patterning in the same warm brown tones, with a central rosette or medallion design in the middle of the note providing additional visual security complexity.
The reverse is printed in a slightly softer mauve-brown tone and is dominated by a pastoral agricultural scene that celebrates Kenya’s rural economy. To the right foreground, a woman wearing a head wrap and light-coloured clothing is depicted harvesting or tending to a tall-stemmed crop plant, shown in fine engraved detail. Behind her stretches an expansive, meticulously rendered plantation field, with evenly spaced rows of low-growing crops receding into the middle distance. In the background, a cluster of traditional thatched structures and palm trees are visible, and beyond these rises a range of mountains rendered with atmospheric perspective. The denomination “FIVE SHILLINGS” is printed in clean serif capitals along the top edge, and the numeral “5” appears on both the left and right sides of the note. The entire reverse composition is enclosed within the same interlaced geometric border pattern as the front, maintaining visual consistency across the note. No additional text, signatures, or security features are visible on the reverse beyond the denomination inscription and the border design.
