1/4 Dinar Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1960)

When Kuwait established its first independent currency authority in 1960, the Kuwait Currency Board issued a set of banknotes that would mark the nation’s formal separation from the Indian rupee zone and announce its arrival as a sovereign economic force. This quarter dinar note belongs to that founding series, printed at a moment when the emirate’s oil revenues were beginning to reshape the Gulf entirely. The note’s very existence was an act of nation-building, providing Kuwait with the monetary infrastructure to manage a rapidly expanding economy. It remained in circulation only briefly before the Central Bank of Kuwait succeeded the Currency Board in 1969.

On the front, the dominant feature to the right is a portrait of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait who oversaw the country’s transition to full independence and whose authority the Currency Board operated under. He is depicted wearing a traditional white dishdasha and a black-and-white chequered keffiyeh held in place by a dark agal, rendered in a finely detailed intaglio-style engraving that gives his portrait a sharp, three-dimensional quality against the note’s overall lilac and purple toning. To the upper right, the serial number — rendered here as I/A 754694 — appears in dark numerals, with the fraction ¼ printed in Arabic script at the upper right corner and again at the lower left. Centrally placed on the face of the note is an ornate cartouche containing Arabic text identifying the denomination as “ربع دينار” (Quarter Dinar), surrounded by finely executed geometric and arabesque patterning that fills the central field of the note. Additional Arabic text below records the issue date of 1960 and the authorising signature of the Kuwait Currency Board. The background of the note is covered in a delicate guilloché lattice of interlocking pale lilac rosettes and geometric forms, providing a subtle but technically accomplished security substrate across the entire face. A further serial number is repeated at the lower centre, and decorative floral corner motifs anchor each edge of the design. The overall colour palette is a unified mauve-to-purple range, giving the note a restrained but dignified appearance.

The reverse is printed in the same deep purple-brown ink and is dominated by a large oval vignette depicting an aerial or elevated view of a busy Kuwaiti harbour, with cargo ships, dhows, and maritime vessels moored alongside extended jetties and docking structures. The detail in this engraving is considerable, with visible cranes, warehousing, and what appears to be a modern port infrastructure reflecting Kuwait’s rapid commercial development of the era. To the upper left of the oval, an elaborate arabesque and foliate panel provides a decorative counterbalance. The issuing authority is named prominently above the vignette in English serif lettering reading “Kuwait Currency Board”, with the denomination stated at the lower centre as “Quarter Dinar” in matching Roman typeface. The fraction ¼ appears in the upper right and lower right corners of the reverse, framed by further guilloché border work and fine-line geometric patterning that runs along all four edges of the note. A large watermark impression is clearly visible to the right of the central vignette, occupying the blank reserve area of the paper and visible as a pale ghost impression within the cream-toned stock. The reverse’s composition balances text, decorative engraving, and the harbour scene with the assured hand of an experienced security printer.
