1/4 Dinar Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1968)

Kuwait’s Central Bank was formally established in 1969, just one year after this note’s legislative authorisation under Law No. 32 of 1968, during the reign of Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, the third Emir of Kuwait. The country was riding a wave of extraordinary oil wealth, rapidly transforming its financial infrastructure to reflect its new status as one of the world’s most prosperous nations. This quarter dinar note entered circulation as Kuwait sought to assert monetary independence through a sophisticated, professionally engraved currency. The note later received the distinctive post-liberation silver underlaid arms treatment in 1992, following Kuwait’s liberation from Iraqi occupation during the Gulf War.

On the front, the note is rendered predominantly in shades of rose pink, crimson, and deep mauve, with intricate guilloché patterning filling the borders on both the left and right margins. To the left, a detailed engraving of an oil derrick is clearly visible, referencing Kuwait’s petroleum industry, which underpinned the nation’s rapid modernisation. At the centre, bold Arabic calligraphy spells out the denomination — ربع دينار (Quarter Dinar) — along with a line of Arabic text referencing Law No. 32 of 1968. Positioned to the right of centre is the State of Kuwait coat of arms, rendered in a circular vignette: a dhow sailing upon stylised waves, beneath a falcon with outstretched wings and a shield displaying the national emblem, all printed in violet-pink tones. The coat of arms bears the silver underlay characteristic of the 1992 post-liberation reissue. At the top right, the serial number د/٢ ٨٣٤٩٢٢ is printed in dark ink, repeated again at the lower left. The issuing authority name — بنك الكويت المركزي (Central Bank of Kuwait) — appears in prominent Arabic script across the upper portion of the note. Two signature panels are visible at the lower centre, with Arabic titles identifying the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank respectively. A geometric star rosette pattern in green and blue tones is positioned at the lower centre of the note, providing an additional security embellishment. The fraction ¼ appears in all four corners of the note in a serif typeface.

The reverse is printed in deep brown and purple tones against a lightly tinted background. The dominant central image is a finely engraved aerial perspective of a large industrial oil refinery complex, depicting storage tanks, processing towers, pipelines, and sprawling facility buildings rendered with exceptional detail and depth. This scene occupies the majority of the note’s face and speaks directly to Kuwait’s petroleum-driven economy. To the upper left, the English-language text “Central Bank of Kuwait” is printed in clean, dark serif lettering. Denomination indicators — ¼ — appear in the upper left and upper right corners as well as at the lower left, each framed within decorative rosette cartouches of varying sizes. The lower right corner features a multicoloured geometric Islamic star pattern — similar in style to that seen on the front — rendered in green, red, blue, and gold, adding a decorative counterpoint to the industrial imagery. To the right of centre, a large plain circular area is visible, consistent with a watermark zone or security feature within the paper stock. Fine guilloché scrollwork runs along the left and right edges of the note, completing the overall composition.
