1/4 Dinar Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1968)

Kuwait’s identity as a maritime nation with deep roots in Gulf culture and Islamic tradition is woven into every element of this quarter dinar note, issued in 1968 by the Central Bank of Kuwait. The imagery speaks to a society proud of its seafaring heritage and its place as a newly independent state, having gained full independence in 1961 and established its own central bank shortly thereafter. The Arabic phrase “We Seek God’s Assistance” — بالله نستعين — appears prominently, anchoring the note in the spiritual and political values of the Kuwaiti state. Issued under the sixth series of the Central Bank of Kuwait, this note remained in circulation until its withdrawal in 2014.

On the front, the design is organised across a warm palette of earthy browns, terracottas, and muted oranges, with a distinct geometric border of repeating diamond and cross-hatched guilloché patterns running along the top and bottom edges in red and blue. The central composition is divided into distinct vertical panels. On the left, the State of Kuwait’s official coat of of arms is displayed in colour — featuring the golden falcon of Quraysh with wings spread, bearing a shield decorated with the national flag colours and a traditional dhow sailing on blue waters beneath a sky. Below the coat of arms sits a finely engraved image of what appears to be a traditional Kuwaiti oil or water pump installation, rendered in dark brown intaglio. To the right of the coat of arms, a large central panel in orange-brown tones carries the denomination text in Arabic script — ربع دينار — meaning “Quarter Dinar.” In the right-hand portion of the note, a detailed engraving depicts traditional Kuwaiti dhow sailing vessels with tall masts and rigging, rendered against a plain background, evoking the nation’s seafaring and pearl-diving past. The serial number AE/2 030203 is printed vertically in red along the left margin. The issuing authority, بنك الكويت المركزي (Central Bank of Kuwait), is printed in bold Arabic script across the upper portion of the note, flanked on the upper left by the Arabic phrase بالله نستعين (“We Seek God’s Assistance”). The denomination ¼ appears in numeral form in both the top-left corner and the lower-right corner. Two authorising signatures appear in the lower-centre area alongside a text panel giving the legal issuance details in Arabic, including a date reference to 1968. A security thread is embedded vertically within the paper, visible as a dark stripe running through the note.

The reverse is printed predominantly in warm brown and cream tones with a consistent guilloché-patterned border of interlocking geometric motifs in soft red and blue running along all four edges. At the top of the note, the English-language text “We Seek God’s Assistance” is engraved in a formal serif typeface above the bold inscription “Central Bank of Kuwait,” both rendered in dark brown. The denomination numeral ¼ appears in the upper-left and lower-right corners. The centrepiece of the reverse is a large, finely detailed intaglio engraving depicting a traditional Kuwaiti genre scene: a group of figures in traditional Gulf dress — both standing and seated — gathered together in what appears to be an outdoor communal setting, possibly a market or social gathering. The figures are rendered with considerable ethnographic detail, their flowing robes and head coverings carefully delineated, evoking everyday life in pre-oil Kuwait. Beneath this central scene, the words “Quarter Dinar” are printed in elegant serif lettering in English, with the numeral ¼ repeated beside it. To the lower left of the note, a rosette guilloché motif in pale blue-green provides an additional security and decorative element. The overall printing quality is of high intaglio standard, with raised ink detailing visible across the figurative scene.
