1/4 Dinar Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1980-1991)

Surviving examples of the Quarter Dinar issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait between 1980 and 1991 are considerably scarcer than their original circulation numbers might suggest, owing to the catastrophic events of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 and the subsequent Gulf War, during which enormous quantities of Kuwaiti currency were looted, destroyed, or deliberately removed from circulation. When Kuwait liberated and recalled its entire pre-invasion currency series in 1991, most notes were systematically withdrawn and demonetised, meaning that well-preserved specimens are genuinely uncommon in the secondary market today. The note is further distinguished by its identifying white underlayed arms design, a specific printing characteristic that separates it from otherwise similar issues within the Central Bank of Kuwait series, making it a precisely datable and historically resonant piece of twentieth-century Gulf monetary history.

On the front, the note is printed predominantly in tones of purple and mauve, with the overall design carrying a finely detailed guilloché background of interlocking geometric lattice patterns that fill the field behind the central text elements. In the upper right corner sits the State of Kuwait’s national emblem — the coat of arms — rendered with considerable precision, showing a traditional dhow sailing vessel set against stylised waves within a shield, flanked by a falcon with outstretched wings, the white underlaying of this arms device being the key identifying feature of this particular issue. The central portion of the face carries the denomination inscription in Arabic script, reading “ربع دينار” (Quarter Dinar), presented in a calligraphic cartouche surrounded by fine ornamental scrollwork. To the left of centre, a tall oil derrick is depicted in a detailed intaglio-style vignette, referencing Kuwait’s petroleum industry, which underpinned the country’s extraordinary economic growth in the latter decades of the twentieth century. In the lower left and lower right corners, the fractional denomination “¼” is repeated, and two further ornate circular rosette devices in multicoloured geometric and Islamic star-pattern motifs are visible in the lower centre, adding visual richness to the layout. The note carries two Arabic-script signature panels, one attributed to the Minister of Finance and one to the Governor of the Central Bank, positioned side by side in the lower middle portion of the face. The serial number — rendered in both Arabic-Eastern and Western numerals — appears in the upper right and lower left margins, with the prefix visible as a combination of Arabic characters and digits. Arabic text running across the upper portion of the note identifies the issuing authority as “بنك الكويت المركزي” (Central Bank of Kuwait), while a further Arabic line references the legal authorisation under Law Number 32 of 1968.

The reverse is printed in dark brown and warm mauve tones, with “Central Bank of Kuwait” inscribed in clear roman lettering across the top margin in English. The dominant central vignette is a finely engraved aerial perspective of a large industrial oil refinery or petrochemical processing complex, depicting storage tanks, pipework, processing towers, and extensive low-level industrial infrastructure stretching across the pictorial field — a direct and deliberate celebration of Kuwait’s oil wealth as the foundation of its modern state. To the right of this central vignette, a large, plain circular watermark area is visible, left unprinted to allow the watermark embedded in the paper to show through when the note is held to light. The fractional denomination “¼” appears prominently in the upper left, lower left, and right-hand margins of the reverse, with “Quarter Dinar” printed in English in the lower right quadrant alongside a further example of the multicoloured Islamic geometric rosette motif that also appears on the face, here rendered in orange, green, and blue tessellated star patterns. Decorative dark scrollwork borders frame the corners and edges of the reverse design, tying the composition together with characteristic Central Bank of Kuwait design continuity across the series.
