1 Fils Kuwait (Issued 1961)

The 1 fils belongs to Kuwait’s first national coinage, issued from 1961 after independence when the fils replaced the earlier rupee-based money. It is a small coin struck in golden nickel-brass, with a plain edge, a warm yellow tone and the light feel of the lowest denomination in the series. One hundred fils make up a dirham and one thousand a Kuwaiti dinar.

On the obverse, the value fills the centre within a plain circle, with the Eastern Arabic numeral “١” above the Arabic word “فلس” (fils). An Arabic legend naming the State of Kuwait arcs across the top, and “KUWAIT” is spelled out in Latin capitals around the lower rim, all inside a beaded border.

On the reverse, a traditional Kuwaiti sailing dhow, or boom, is shown at sea with its masts and rigging in full detail, a proud symbol of the country’s pearling and trading heritage. Below the hull the dates are given in Eastern Arabic numerals as “١٩٦١” and “١٣٨٠”, marking the year 1961 in the Gregorian calendar alongside its Islamic (AH 1380) equivalent.
