10 Dinars Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1960)

Withdrawn from circulation following the establishment of the Central Bank of Kuwait in 1969, the 10 Dinars note of 1960 was among the very first banknotes ever issued in Kuwait’s history, produced under the authority of the Kuwait Currency Board shortly after the country gained full sovereignty over its monetary affairs. The Kuwait Currency Board series was introduced on 1 April 1961, replacing the Indian Gulf Rupee that had previously served as the territory’s currency, and these notes remained legal tender for less than a decade before being superseded by the Central Bank of Kuwait’s own issue. Their withdrawal marked a decisive transition in Kuwait’s financial infrastructure, reflecting the rapid development of the state’s institutions during the oil boom era.

On the front, the note is dominated by a portrait of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait who presided over the country’s independence and the establishment of its currency system, rendered in a fine engraved style to the right-hand side of the note against a plain light background. The central field of the note is occupied by a large ornate panel of dense Arabic calligraphic text, with the denomination “عشرة دنانير” (Ten Dinars) prominently inscribed within an elaborately decorated cartouche featuring intricate arabesques and floral guilloché patterns in green, orange, and brown tones. Above this central panel, the name of the issuing authority, the Kuwait Currency Board, appears in stylised Arabic script within its own decorative header. The overall colour palette of the front is a layered composition of sage green, pale blue, and warm ochre, with repeating geometric and arabesque border patterns framing all four edges of the note. The serial number — printed twice, once in the upper right and once in the lower left — reads 1/4 339197, rendered in violet ink. A date reference in Arabic numerals is visible within the text panel alongside what appears to be a manuscript-style signature or official authorisation mark printed in a darker ink over the central field. The denomination numeral “10” appears in both the upper left and lower right corners of the note in clear bold type.

The reverse of the note is printed in a monochromatic dark green palette and presents a striking central vignette depicting a traditional Kuwaiti dhow under full sail, its large triangular lateen sails billowing against a lightly engraved sky with softly rendered clouds above a gently undulating sea. The vessel, a classic wooden sailing ship of the type historically associated with Gulf trade and pearl diving, is depicted in fine line engraving with considerable detail given to the rigging, hull, and a small flag visible at the stern. The name “Kuwait Currency Board” is printed in clear serif lettering in the upper central portion of the reverse, with the English denomination “Ten Dinars” appearing along the lower edge in matching serif type. The numeral “10” is repeated in each of the four corner positions. Decorative arabesque corner ornaments appear at each angle of the note, echoing the geometric border motifs found on the front, and a subtle repeating pattern frames the outer edges of the reverse field.
