10 Dinars Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1980-1991)
The 1980–1991 series of Kuwaiti Dinar banknotes was introduced following the establishment of the Central Bank of Kuwait’s revised currency framework, reflecting Kuwait’s growing financial independence and the consolidation of its oil-driven economy during a pivotal decade in the Gulf region. Issued under the authority of the Central Bank of Kuwait and governed by Law No. 32 of 1968, this series represented the nation’s commitment to a stable and internationally recognised monetary system. The ten dinar denomination was among the most significant in daily circulation, and the series carries particular historical weight given that it was the currency in use at the time of the Iraqi invasion of 1990. The white underlaid arms feature serves as the primary identifying characteristic distinguishing this issue from earlier and later printings.
On the front, the note is printed predominantly in shades of green, olive, and rose pink, with an intricate guilloché background of fine rosette and lattice patterns that fills much of the central field. To the left of centre, a finely engraved falcon is depicted perched upon a decorative base, rendered in dark green with considerable detail in the feathering and posture. The central panel features a large circular guilloché medallion incorporating Arabic script that reads “عشرة دنانير” — ten dinars — along with further Arabic text referencing the issuing law and date. To the upper right sits the State of Kuwait coat of arms, which displays a traditional dhow sailing upon stylised waves beneath a golden falcon, all rendered in crisp intaglio engraving. The coat of arms in this series is underlaid with white, which is the defining identifying feature of this issue. The issuing authority name, “بنك الكويت المركزي” (Central Bank of Kuwait), appears in Arabic across the top of the note in bold serif lettering. Two signature lines are present in the lower portion of the face, one attributed to the Minister of Finance and one to the Governor of the Bank. The serial number, printed in reddish-brown ink, appears twice — once in the lower left and once in the upper left — in the format combining Arabic-Indic numerals and alphanumeric prefixes. A geometric star-pattern printed panel in pink, green, and blue tones appears in the lower centre, adding a further layer of visual security patterning. The denomination numeral “10” appears in large format at the lower left and lower right corners, and decorative foliate corner motifs frame the entire composition in dark green engraving.
The reverse is printed in a cooler, more uniform green palette and is dominated by a large, finely engraved central vignette depicting a traditional Kuwaiti dhow under full sail on open water. The vessel is shown in impressive detail, with multiple billowing sails, rigging lines, and a crew visible aboard, conveying the deep maritime heritage of Kuwait and its historical dependence on pearl diving and seafaring trade. The background behind the ship is formed by a circular guilloché frame of tightly wound engine-turned lines, creating a halo effect around the central image. To the left and lower right, additional guilloché rosette patterns in green provide further security printing. The text “Central Bank of Kuwait” is printed prominently across the upper portion of the reverse in bold Latin serif typography. The denomination “Ten Dinars” appears in English along the lower right in clean serif lettering, accompanied by the numeral “10” repeated in the upper right and lower right corners. A further decorative geometric panel in pale colours is visible in the lower centre, echoing the patterning found on the obverse. The overall printing is clean intaglio work typical of high-security currency production of the period.
