20 Dinars Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 2014)

Advanced security engineering is central to the 2014 issue of the Kuwaiti twenty-dinar banknote, which incorporates a windowed security thread embedded within the substrate and visible as a shifting metallic strip running vertically through the note’s body. The polymer-composite paper construction itself provides an additional layer of anti-counterfeiting protection, as the translucent qualities of the substrate allow for sophisticated see-through registration elements and watermark-style ghost imagery when the note is held to light. A holographic or optically variable device appears on the front face, taking the form of a vivid spiral shell motif rendered in iridescent purples and blues that shift in appearance depending on the viewing angle. These security measures placed the note firmly among the more technically sophisticated currency issues in the Middle East at the time of its introduction.

On the front, the note is dominated by a rich blue and teal colour palette applied across a substrate that carries finely detailed guilloché patterning throughout the background fields. The central left portion of the face features a detailed architectural illustration of what appears to be the Grand Mosque of Kuwait City, rendered with careful linework that captures the structure’s minaret tower, arched façades, and surrounding plaza. To the right of this architectural vignette, a traditional Kuwaiti dhow sailing vessel is depicted on calm stylised water, its sails unfurled, representing Kuwait’s deep seafaring and pearl-diving heritage. Above the dhow sits the national emblem of Kuwait — a circular device incorporating a dhow at sea beneath a falcon with wings spread — printed in full colour with crisp detail. The denomination numeral “20” appears in large format on the right side of the note in deep blue, while the Arabic text “عشرون دينار” (twenty dinars) is rendered in flowing calligraphic script along the lower left. The issuing authority name “بنك الكويت المركزي” (Central Bank of Kuwait) is printed in Arabic across the upper portion of the note. A serial number reading FF 06 048850 is printed in red numerals, and additional Arabic serial figures appear vertically along the left margin. The optically variable spiral shell device in purple and metallic tones is positioned in the lower centre-right area, adding visual drama and a key security focal point. Two signature lines appear in the upper right quadrant of the note, corresponding to authorising officials of the Central Bank of Kuwait.

The reverse presents a complementary palette of pale blue, sky blue, and soft gold tones across a similarly guilloché-enriched background. The issuing authority name “CENTRAL BANK OF KUWAIT” is printed prominently in English across the upper centre of the note in clean, widely-spaced serif typography. The large denomination numeral “20” appears in the upper left in bold blue, whilst an equally prominent “20” in deeper blue guilloché engraving fills the upper right quadrant. The centrepiece of the reverse is a finely engraved illustration of a traditional Kuwaiti boom — a large, deep-sea wooden sailing vessel with multiple masts and full rigging — rendered in detailed grey-blue linework against a lightly textured background. To the left of the sailing vessel, a ghost watermark-style image visible through the substrate shows what appears to be a figure in a traditional posture, likely a pearl diver, evoking Kuwait’s pre-oil economic heritage. The word “TWENTY” appears in bold capitals along the lower centre, followed by “Dinars” written in an elegant italic script. Geometric rosette and mandala-style patterns in pale blue occupy the lower left and lower right corners. The Arabic numeral “٢٠” appears in the lower left margin in blue, completing the bilingual denomination presentation across the note.
