20 Dinars Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1980–1991)

The 20 Dinars note issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait between 1980 and 1991 represents one of the most significant series in Kuwaiti monetary history, coinciding with the nation’s continued development as a major Gulf financial centre following the consolidation of its sovereign banking framework under the Central Bank of Kuwait Act of 1968. The series was produced at a time of considerable economic growth driven by Kuwait’s oil revenues, and the notes themselves were designed to reflect national pride and institutional confidence. This particular issue is identifiable by its white underlayed arms, a distinguishing characteristic that sets it apart from earlier and later printings within the same broad family. The series was ultimately withdrawn from circulation following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 and the subsequent liberation of the country in 1991.

On the front, the note is dominated by warm tones of brown, tan, and gold, overlaid on an intricate guilloché background of fine geometric latticework that fills the majority of the surface. To the right of centre, the State of Kuwait coat of of arms is prominently displayed, depicting the traditional dhow sailing vessel set within a circular device above a falcon with outstretched wings, all rendered in brown and cream tones. The coat of arms is presented against a light background, consistent with the white underlaying that defines this series. The central text is rendered in Arabic script, with the denomination “عشرون دينار” — meaning Twenty Dinars — appearing in bold, confident lettering against the patterned ground. Additional Arabic text references the issuing authority and the legislative basis of the note, specifically citing Law Number 32 of 1968, which established the Central Bank of Kuwait. To the upper right, the numeral “٢٠” appears in Arabic-Indic script alongside the Western numeral “20” in the upper left corner. The serial number, presented in a dark reddish-brown ink, appears twice — once in the upper right and once along the lower portion of the note — in a combined Arabic and Western alphanumeric format. To the left, a finely engraved architectural vignette depicts a modernist building, rendered in detailed intaglio line work. Two signature panels appear in the lower central area of the note, representing the authorising officials of the Central Bank of Kuwait. A small rosette or floral guilloche motif is also visible near the centre-lower portion of the design.

The reverse presents a clean and structured composition in similar warm brown and tan tones on a cream-coloured ground. The English inscription “Central Bank of Kuwait” appears prominently along the top edge in clear serif typography. The centrepiece of the reverse is a large, detailed engraving of a substantial modernist building, understood to be the Central Bank of Kuwait headquarters, depicted with meticulous architectural detail showing its colonnaded façade, rectangular windows, and surrounding palm trees rendered in fine intaglio line work. To the left of the central building, a secondary smaller architectural vignette with a series of arched openings is also visible. The denomination numeral “20” appears in three locations across the reverse: in the upper left, in the upper right within a decorative shield-shaped cartouche, and in large numerals at the lower right. The words “Twenty Dinars” are printed in English in the lower right quadrant in clear, elegant serif type. A detailed rosette or multi-petal floral guilloche motif occupies the lower centre of the design, accompanied by stylised palm frond or foliate decoration rendered in blue and brown tones to the right, adding an organic visual element to the otherwise architectural composition.
