20 Fils Kuwait (Issued 1961)

The 20 fils belongs to Kuwait’s first national coinage of 1961, issued after independence to replace the earlier Gulf rupee currency. Unlike the smaller golden values, it is struck in a silvery cupro-nickel alloy with a reeded edge, giving it a brighter colour and a more substantial feel in the hand.

On the obverse, the value sits at the centre inside a plain circle, with the Eastern Arabic numeral “٢٠” placed above the Arabic word “فلس” (fils). An Arabic inscription naming the State of Kuwait arcs across the top, and “KUWAIT” runs in Latin capitals around the lower edge, enclosed by a beaded border.

On the reverse, a traditional Kuwaiti dhow rides the sea with its masts and rigging carefully detailed, recalling the country’s long heritage of trade and pearl diving. Below the waves the two dates are shown in Eastern Arabic numerals as “١٩٦١” and “١٣٨٠”, the year 1961 and its Islamic (AH 1380) equivalent.
