5 Dinars Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1968)

Kuwait’s establishment of its Central Bank in 1968 marked a defining moment in the young nation’s journey toward full economic sovereignty, coming just seven years after independence from Britain. The portrait chosen for this five-dinar note — Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, the ruling Emir of Kuwait at the time — embodied that sovereign confidence, placing the nation’s leader at the heart of its currency. For Kuwaiti citizens, the banknote represented both the immense oil wealth being channelled into national development and the stability of the Al-Sabah dynasty that had governed Kuwait for generations. This note, issued under the authority of the newly formed Central Bank of Kuwait, was a physical declaration of monetary independence.

On the front, the dominant feature is a portrait of Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah positioned to the right of the composition, depicted in traditional Kuwaiti dress including a white thobe and ghutra headdress, rendered with fine intaglio engraving that gives the image considerable depth and presence. The background behind the portrait carries intricate geometric latticework patterning in tones of blue and lavender, creating a dense guilloché field across the central and left portions of the note. At the top centre, the issuing authority is printed in bold Arabic calligraphy reading “بنك الكويت المركزي” — the Central Bank of Kuwait — enclosed within a decorative cartouche of floral and arabesque design. A large denomination inscription in Arabic script, “خمسة دنانير” (Five Dinars), is printed prominently in the central field in dark blue ink. Below this, further Arabic text details the legal tender authority and issue date referencing 1968. The numeral “5” appears in the upper left corner and lower left corner, both set within ornate bordered panels. The serial number, rendered in dark numerals and reading 6٤٧٤٦٣ with a prefix character, appears twice — once at the upper right and once at the lower left — consistent with the printing conventions of the period. The overall colour palette is a cool blue-grey with soft lavender and off-white tones, punctuated by the darker engraved linework throughout.

The reverse presents a striking aerial or elevated perspective engraving of a dense Kuwaiti residential townscape, showing row upon row of low-rise traditional courtyard buildings receding into the distance along what appears to be a broad urban boulevard or road cutting through the settlement. The engraving is executed in fine blue-grey intaglio linework, capturing the flat-roofed architectural character typical of mid-twentieth-century Gulf urban development, and conveying a strong sense of Kuwait’s growing urban population and expanding infrastructure during the oil boom era. To the right of this central scene, a large circular watermark space is visible as a pale, unprinted reserve area. The upper centre of the reverse carries the issuing authority name in English — “Central Bank of Kuwait” — in elegant serif typography within a decorative banner. The denomination “Five Dinars” is rendered in flowing script lettering at the lower centre of the note. In each of the four corners, the numeral “5” sits within square-framed panels featuring fine geometric border work. To the far right, a vertical panel of richly coloured interlocking geometric and floral Islamic ornamental design in greens, blues, and reds provides vivid contrast against the otherwise cool blue-grey engraved field of the central image.
