5 Dinars Kuwaiti Dinar (Issued 1980–1991)

The 1980–1991 series of Kuwaiti Dinar banknotes was issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait under the authority of the Currency Law of 1968, representing a consolidation of Kuwait’s sovereign monetary identity during a period of considerable economic and geopolitical significance in the Gulf region. This particular issue came in the years following Kuwait’s emergence as one of the world’s leading oil-producing nations, when the Kuwaiti Dinar had established itself as one of the highest-valued currencies globally. The series is identifiable by its white underlaid state arms, a defining security and design characteristic that distinguishes it from earlier and later printings. The series remained in circulation until it was withdrawn following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and the subsequent liberation in 1991, events that brought an abrupt end to this issue.

On the front, the note is presented in a predominantly blue, violet, and lilac colour palette with intricate guilloché patterning covering much of the background surface, giving the note its complex, layered visual texture. To the upper right, the state emblem of Kuwait is prominently displayed — a circular device featuring a traditional dhow sailing upon stylised waves beneath a falcon with outstretched wings, all rendered in fine intaglio engraving. Immediately above the emblem, Arabic script reads “دولة الكويت” (State of Kuwait). The issuing authority name, “بنك الكويت المركزي” (Central Bank of Kuwait), appears in bold Arabic calligraphy across the upper central portion of the note. The denomination in Arabic, “خمسة دنانير” (Five Dinars), is set prominently in the central field, accompanied by a reference to the Currency Law beneath it in smaller Arabic text. To the left side of the note, a tall minaret tower is depicted in fine line engraving, rendered in blue tones against the guilloché background. A large, pale circular guilloché rosette occupies the centre-left of the note, providing a watermark window. A multicoloured geometric star pattern in green, red, and blue — reminiscent of traditional Islamic geometric tile design — appears in the lower central area. The numeral “5” appears in ornate form in each of the four corner sections of the note, rendered in blue. Two signature panels appear beneath the central denomination text, printed in Arabic. The serial number “129615” preceded by the prefix “د/18” appears in both the upper right and lower left areas of the note, printed in dark blue ink. A security thread is embedded within the paper, visible as a dark vertical strip when held to light.

The reverse of the note is printed in a similar blue and violet scheme and is dominated by a large, detailed architectural engraving of a fortified Kuwaiti building, identifiable as the Seif Palace or a comparable historic coastal administrative structure, rendered with considerable precision in intaglio line work. The building features a prominent clock tower at its centre, arched gateways, crenellated walls, and lateral wings, all depicted against a plain background with fine cross-hatched shading. The inscription “Central Bank of Kuwait” is printed in clear, serif English lettering along the upper portion of the reverse. The denomination “Five Dinars” is stated in English in the lower right quadrant in bold serif type, accompanied by the numeral “5” in each of the four corner areas. The same multicoloured geometric Islamic star motif from the front appears centrally on the reverse, providing a consistent design element across both faces. To the right of the central building vignette, a large guilloché rosette with fine radiating line patterns provides an anti-counterfeiting background element. The overall print quality reflects the high-specification security printing standards typical of this era of Central Bank of Kuwait issues.
