50 Fils Kuwait (Issued 1961)

The 50 fils is one of the mid-range values in Kuwait’s first national coinage of 1961, struck after independence when the fils and dinar replaced the Gulf rupee. Made of silvery cupro-nickel with a reeded edge, it is a solid, bright coin white in tone compared with the golden lower denominations.

On the obverse, the value fills the centre within a plain circle, the Eastern Arabic numeral “٥٠” set above the Arabic word “فلس” (fils). An Arabic legend naming the State of Kuwait curves across the upper field, while “KUWAIT” appears in Latin capitals around the lower rim inside a beaded border.

On the reverse, a traditional Kuwaiti dhow sails on the sea, its masts, spars and rigging rendered in fine relief as a symbol of the nation’s seafaring and pearling past. Below the hull the dates are inscribed in Eastern Arabic numerals, “١٩٦١” and “١٣٨٠”, marking 1961 alongside its Islamic (AH 1380) equivalent.
