2.000 Kip Kip (Issued 2011)
Intaglio and offset lithography printing techniques, well established in South-East Asian central bank note production by the early 2010s, are both clearly evident in this 2,000 Kip note issued by the Bank of Lao PDR. The raised tactile quality associated with intaglio work is visible in the portrait and denomination numerals, where ink sits proud of the paper surface in the manner characteristic of engraved currency printing. Offset lithography provides the broader background colour washes and fine geometric patterning that give the note its layered, multi-tonal appearance. Together, these two processes produce a note that meets modern security standards while carrying the elaborate decorative vocabulary traditional to Lao banknote design.
On the front, the dominant feature is a formal portrait of Kaysone Phomvihane, the founding leader of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and one of the most significant political figures in modern Lao history, rendered in deep blue-grey intaglio engraving to the left of centre. His portrait is presented in a three-quarter facing position, wearing a dark suit and tie, with fine cross-hatched shading defining his facial features with considerable precision. Behind and to the right of the portrait sits a detailed vignette of Wat Xieng Thong, the celebrated royal temple of Luang Prabang, depicted with its sweeping multi-tiered roofline and surrounding architectural detail rendered in the same cool blue-grey tones. The upper portion of the note carries the full name of the issuing authority written in Lao script, while the national emblem of the Lao PDR — a circular device featuring That Luang stupa, paddy fields, forests, and a cogwheel — appears to the right of the temple vignette, framed within an ornate decorative border. The far right of the note features a prominent stylised rendition of the denomination numeral 2000 in a bold, decorative typeface, printed in deep blue against the note’s lighter ground. Along the lower portion runs a serial number — AB 7713177 — printed in dark ink against a lighter field, accompanied by Lao script text. The overall ground colour of the front is a cool aquamarine and pale blue, enriched with fine guilloché patterns and geometric rosette work across the left-hand margin area, printed in complementary tones of teal and gold. A vertical security strip is embedded within the paper, visible as a thin dark line running parallel to the left-hand edge.
The reverse presents a predominantly aquamarine and blue colour scheme consistent with the front, with the denomination numeral 2000 appearing in the same bold stylised typeface at the upper left, printed in dark blue. To the left, a vertical panel of intricate guilloché and traditional Lao decorative patterning — incorporating stepped geometric forms, floral medallions, and a central ornamental device incorporating Lao motifs — is printed in tones of gold, teal, and blue, providing both visual complexity and anti-counterfeiting depth. The central and right-hand portion of the reverse is dominated by a detailed engraved vignette of what appears to be the Nam Ngum hydroelectric dam and its associated power station building, shown from a slight angle with the dam wall visible in the foreground and the multi-storey station structure behind, set against a lightly rendered hillside and sky. This infrastructure imagery reflects Laos’s significant investment in hydroelectric power as a cornerstone of its national development programme. The issuing bank name in Lao script appears in gold lettering along the upper right, and the denomination in Lao script — ສອງພັນກີບ — runs along the lower right in bold dark blue lettering alongside the Arabic numeral 2000. The year 2011 is printed in small numerals at the lower left, confirming the issue date.
