1 Santims (Issued 2008)

The 1 santims was the smallest coin of independent Latvia’s Lats currency, which circulated from the early 1990s until the country adopted the euro in 2014. Struck in copper-plated steel, it has a warm reddish-brown colour, a smooth edge and a very light, thin feel appropriate to the lowest denomination, where one hundred santimu made up a single lats.

On the obverse, the coin bears the small national coat of arms of Latvia: a shield showing a rising sun above, a lion and a griffin in the lower quarters, and three stars set over the top. The legend “LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA” curves around the design and the date “2008” appears at the foot between two dots.

On the reverse, a large numeral “1” stands at the centre, crowned by a fan of fine curved rays sweeping across the upper field and flanked on each side by a small diamond ornament. The word “SANTIMS” is inscribed in an arc along the lower rim, naming the denomination.
