2 Santimi (Issued 2009)

The 2 santimi was a low-value coin of independent Latvia’s Lats currency, in circulation from the 1990s until Latvia joined the euro in 2014. Struck in copper-plated steel, it has a warm reddish-brown tone, a smooth edge and a light, thin feel, one of the small copper pieces used in everyday change where one hundred santimu equalled one lats.

On the obverse, the coin carries the small national coat of arms of Latvia — a shield with a rising sun, a lion and a griffin, topped by three stars — surrounded by the legend “LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA”, with the date “2009” at the foot between two dots.

On the reverse, a large numeral “2” occupies the centre beneath a spray of fine curved rays, with a small diamond ornament to either side. The word “SANTIMI” is inscribed in an arc along the lower edge, matching the plural form of the denomination.
