50 Santimu (Issued 2009)

The 50 santimu was the highest santimu value of independent Latvia’s Lats currency, circulating until the country adopted the euro in 2014. Struck in a silvery cupro-nickel alloy, it has a bright white tone, a smooth edge and a firm, substantial feel, the largest of the sub-lats coins, where one hundred santimu made up a single lats.

On the obverse, the coin carries the small national coat of arms of Latvia — the shield with a rising sun, a lion and a griffin, crowned by three stars — encircled by the legend “LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA”, with the date “2009” at the base between two dots.

On the reverse, a young pine sapling with three sprigs of needles rises above a horizontal line, a fresh natural emblem in place of the plain numeral designs of the smaller santimi. Below the line the value is given as a large “50” over the word “SANTIMU” curving along the rim.
