1 Centas (Issued 1991)

The 1 centas was part of the first coinage of newly independent Lithuania, struck in 1991 as the country prepared to restore its own currency, the litas, in which one hundred centai made up one litas. It is a very light coin made of aluminium, silvery-white in colour with a smooth edge and the thin, weightless feel typical of that metal.

On the obverse, the coin bears the Vytis, Lithuania’s historic state emblem: an armoured knight galloping on horseback, brandishing a raised sword and carrying a shield charged with a double cross. The national name “LIETUVA” is inscribed below the horse with the date “1991” beneath it.

On the reverse, a large numeral “1” stands to the right, balanced on the left by a stylised Lithuanian folk-art ornament built from crossed and radiating motifs. The word “CENTAS” is inscribed across the base of the coin, naming the denomination in its singular form.
