1 Litas Lithuania (Issued 1991)

The one-litas coin belongs to the first series of coins struck for the restored Lithuanian litas after the country regained independence, dated 1991. Made of a lightweight aluminium-based alloy, it has a pale silvery-white colour and a very light feel, reflecting the difficult economic conditions of the early 1990s. These first issues circulated only briefly before Lithuania’s later currency reform.

On the obverse is the Vytis, Lithuania’s historic state emblem — an armoured knight galloping to the left on horseback, brandishing a raised sword and carrying a shield bearing a double cross. The national name “LIETUVA” and the year “1991” appear below.

On the reverse the large numeral “1” stands at the centre against a field of radiating lines, with the word “LITAS” inscribed beneath it.
