The 2 centai belongs to the first coinage of newly independent Lithuania, struck in 1991 as the litas currency was reintroduced, with one hundred centai to the litas. Like its companion values it is made of lightweight aluminium, silvery-white in colour, with a smooth edge and the thin, feather-light feel characteristic of the metal.

On the obverse, the coin shows the Vytis, the historic emblem of Lithuania: an armoured knight on a galloping horse, sword raised and a double-cross shield on his arm. The country name “LIETUVA” is inscribed below the horse, with the date “1991” beneath.

On the reverse, a large numeral “2” occupies the right of the field, set against a stylised Lithuanian folk-art ornament of crossed and radiating forms on the left. The word “CENTAI” runs across the base, giving the plural form of the denomination.
