5 Centai (Issued 1991)

The 5 centai coin was part of the first series of small change struck for Lithuania after the restoration of its independence, entering circulation in 1991. It was made in lightweight aluminium, giving it a very low weight and a pale, matte silver-grey appearance, and it served as a minor denomination in the transitional coinage that preceded the reformed litas system. The coin is thin with a plain edge and was intended for high-volume everyday use.

On the obverse, the coin carries the Vytis, the historic Lithuanian state emblem, showing an armoured knight galloping on horseback with his sword raised and a shield bearing a double cross on his arm. The national name “LIETUVA” is inscribed along the lower rim, with the year “1991” beneath it, the whole design contained within a fine raised border.

On the reverse, a large numeral “5” dominates the right of the field above the word “CENTAI”.
