50 Centų Lithuania (Issued 1991)

The fifty-centų coin is the largest of the small-change denominations in the first series of the restored Lithuanian litas, dated 1991. It was struck in a bronze-coloured alloy, giving it a warm reddish tone and a light feel, and was issued in the early period after Lithuania regained its independence. Like the rest of this first series, it circulated only briefly before being superseded.

On the obverse is the Vytis, the historic emblem of Lithuania — a mounted knight in armour charging to the left with a raised sword and a shield bearing a double cross. The name “LIETUVA” and the year “1991” are inscribed beneath.

On the reverse the large numeral “50” is set above the word “CENTŲ”, enclosed within a border of small chevron ornaments around the edge.
