1 Franc — Grand Duke Jean, Nickel-Plated Steel (Issued 1988-1995)
The 1 Franc was a small circulation coin of Luxembourg struck between 1988 and 1995 during the reign of Grand Duke Jean. It was made of nickel-plated steel, a hard-wearing and economical material suited to a low-value denomination. The round coin weighs just 2.75 grams and measures 18 mm in diameter, making it the smallest and lightest piece of this franc series. It served as minor legal tender in everyday transactions before the euro changeover.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Jean (1921-2019), Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1964 to 2000, surrounded by the legend “JEAN GRAND-DUC DE LUXEMBOURG”, with the engravers’ initials “J.N.L.” set beneath the portrait.
The reverse shows the face value surmounted by a royal crown, flanked on each side by the mint year, together with the acronym “IML” and the legend below. The lettering reads “19 88 1F IML LËTZEBUERG”.
