5 Francs — Grand Duke Jean, Aluminium-Nickel Bronze (Issued 1989-1995)
The 5 Francs was a circulation coin of Luxembourg struck between 1989 and 1995 under Grand Duke Jean. It was made of aluminium-nickel bronze, an alloy of 92% copper, 6% aluminium and 2% nickel, giving the coin a golden hue and good wearing qualities. The round piece weighs 5.5 grams and measures 24 mm in diameter, making it a mid-sized coin within the franc series. It circulated as everyday legal tender before Luxembourg adopted the euro.
The obverse carries a left-facing portrait of Jean (born 1921), Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1964 to 2000, surrounded by the legend “JEAN GRAND-DUC DE LUXEMBOURG”. The signature “J.N. LEFEVRE” appears beneath the cut of the neck.
The reverse shows the face value above the “IML” monogram of the Luxembourg Monetary Institute and the inscription “LËTZEBUERG”, surmounted by the Grand-Ducal crown and flanked on either side by the date. The lettering reads “19 89 5F IML LËTZEBUERG”.
