50 Francs — Grand Duke Jean, Nickel (Issued 1989-1995)
The 50 Francs was a circulation coin of Luxembourg struck between 1989 and 1995, during the reign of Grand Duke Jean. It was produced in pure nickel (100%), giving it a bright, hard-wearing finish suited to everyday handling. The coin is round, weighs 7 grams and measures 22.75 mm in diameter, making it a compact but substantial piece within the franc series. It served as standard legal tender before Luxembourg’s transition to the euro.
The obverse carries a left-facing portrait of Jean (born 1921), Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1964 to 2000, surrounded by the legend “JEAN GRAND-DUC DE LUXEMBOURG”. The engraver’s signature “J.N.L.” appears beneath the cut of the neck.
The reverse shows the face value above the monogram “IML” of the Luxembourg Monetary Institute and the inscription “LËTZEBUERG”, the whole surmounted by the Grand-Ducal crown and flanked on both sides by the date. The lettering reads “19 89 50F IML LËTZEBUERG”.
