2 Malagasy Ariary Coin – 10 FMG (Issued 2003)
£0.000002
1 MGA = £0.000001
The 2 Malagasy Ariary coin, equivalent to 10 Malagasy Francs (FMG), was issued in 2003 during the transitional period when Madagascar was moving fully from the Malagasy Franc to the Ariary as its primary currency unit. For many years both denominations were used side by side, with the Ariary introduced at a rate of 1 Ariary to 5 Francs. Coins such as this one clearly reference both systems, making them distinctive markers of Madagascar’s monetary history.
On the obverse of the coin, the inscription “FANJAKAN’I MADAGASIKARA” (Republic of Madagascar) curves around a central botanical design featuring cacao pods and leaves, symbolising the country’s agricultural heritage. The date appears below, and the overall design is clean and functional, typical of early post-transition Malagasy coinage.
The reverse displays the denomination prominently, with “10 FRANCS” at the top and “ARIARY ROA” (2 Ariary) below. At the centre is a stylised zebu cattle head, an important cultural and economic symbol in Madagascar, flanked by decorative branches. The dual-denomination layout clearly reflects the coexistence of the Ariary and Franc systems at the time of issue.
These coins are now withdrawn from circulation and no longer used in everyday transactions in Madagascar. As a result, they are commonly found among leftover foreign coins, collections, or legacy holdings and are not accepted by most high-street banks. Despite their low face value, they remain exchangeable through specialist services that handle demonetised and obsolete foreign currency.
