2 Malagasy Ariary Coin (Issued 2003)

£0.000002

1 MGA = £0.000001

The 2 Malagasy Ariary coin, issued in 2003 by the Central Bank of Madagascar (Banky Foiben’i Madagasikara), forms part of the modern Ariary coinage introduced following Madagascar’s transition away from the Malagasy Franc system. The Ariary is unusual internationally as it is not subdivided into 100 units, making these lower-denomination coins an interesting feature of the country’s monetary history. Coins of this period were primarily used for everyday transactions, particularly in local markets and small cash purchases.

On the obverse of the coin, the national authority is clearly identified with the inscription “Banky Foiben’i Madagasikara,” along with the year of issue, 2003. The design features a stylised botanical motif, depicting indigenous plant life that reflects Madagascar’s exceptional biodiversity. The detailing is struck into a copper-coloured surface, giving the coin a warm tone and a robust, utilitarian appearance typical of early-2000s circulation coins.

The reverse displays the denomination “Ariary 2” prominently at the centre, accompanied by the head of a zebu cattle. The zebu is a powerful national symbol in Madagascar, representing wealth, agriculture, and cultural identity. Decorative elements such as curved horns, foliage, and surrounding text reading “Ariary Roa” (meaning “two ariary” in Malagasy) complete the design. The imagery reinforces the close link between the currency and everyday rural life in Madagascar.

Although the 2 Ariary coin was once widely circulated, coins of this denomination are now rarely used outside Madagascar and are not accepted by most high-street banks. As a result, they are frequently sent in for exchange alongside other withdrawn or low-denomination foreign coins.
