5 Malagasy Ariary Coin (Issued 2003)

£0.000005

1 MGA = £0.000001

The 5 Malagasy Ariary coin issued in 2003 forms part of the modern coinage introduced after Madagascar’s transition away from the Malagasy Franc (FMG) system. Although Ariary remains the official currency of Madagascar, lower-denomination coins such as this are no longer commonly used in everyday transactions and are increasingly treated as withdrawn or obsolete outside the country.

The obverse of the coin displays the national identity of Madagascar, with the inscription “Repoblika Demokratika Malagasy” around the edge. At the centre is a prominent five-pointed star above the denomination “ariary 5”, framed by a wreath motif. The date appears below, reinforcing the coin’s place within Madagascar’s post-currency-reform era. The copper-coloured finish and simple yet symbolic design are characteristic of early 2000s Malagasy coinage.

The reverse features an agricultural theme, showing a stylised crop design associated with rice cultivation, a cornerstone of Madagascar’s economy and rural life. Around the design is Malagasy text referencing agricultural production, highlighting the importance of farming and food security to the country. The outer border includes a dotted rim, adding definition and durability to the coin’s striking.

Coins of this denomination saw limited practical use due to low purchasing power and inflation, and many were quickly removed from circulation or set aside. As a result, 5 Ariary coins from this period are now commonly found among legacy currency holdings, collections, or stored alongside older Malagasy Franc denominations.
