1.000 Ringgit (Issued 1995)

At its peak circulation in the mid-1990s, a one-thousand Ringgit note was a substantial sum in everyday Malaysian life — the kind of note handled by bank tellers, business owners, and finance officers rather than passing through the pockets of ordinary shoppers. It would have moved between commercial banks, trading companies, and government offices, representing a significant store of value during Malaysia’s period of rapid economic expansion. Notes from this series were carefully preserved rather than worn down through casual use, and many survived in reasonable condition precisely because of how infrequently they changed hands at street level. By the time this series was withdrawn, it had witnessed more than a decade of Malaysia’s remarkable transformation into a modern industrial economy.

On the front, the dominant figure is Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, portrayed in a finely engraved bust to the right of centre. He is depicted wearing traditional Malay royal dress including a decorative songkok headpiece adorned with an ornate star motif, and his expression is composed and regal. The portrait is rendered with considerable engraving detail, with fine cross-hatching visible in the shading of his robes and face. The overall colour palette of the front is a rich, deep green with teal and blue secondary tones running through the background. The issuing authority is clearly identified at the top in bold serif lettering reading “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA”, flanked by fine guilloché pattern bands that extend across the upper portion of the note. Centrally positioned in large, prominent lettering is the denomination in Malay — “SERIBU RINGGIT” — printed in a dark intaglio green against the lighter background. To the left of centre, a stylised red and green floral or flame-like motif provides a focal decorative element, likely representing a traditional Malaysian ornamental design. A vertical security thread is visible running through the note, and the serial number ZA2877033 appears twice — once vertically along the left edge and once horizontally along the lower right. The numeral denomination “$1000” appears in bold at the lower left in blue-green ink, and again in large numerals at the upper right in dark green. A watermark area is discernible to the left of the portrait zone. The word “GABENOR” is printed in small text beneath the portrait, indicating the Governor’s signature line, with a signature visible immediately above it. Fine geometric guilloché rosette and lattice work fills the background across the entire face of the note, providing both decorative interest and a counterfeit deterrent.

The reverse centres on a detailed architectural engraving of the Bangunan Parlimen — the Malaysian Houses of Parliament in Kuala Lumpur — identified by caption text along the lower edge reading “BANGUNAN PARLIMEN”. The building is rendered with precise intaglio engraving, showing its distinctive modernist tower block rising above a lower horizontal wing, with the pointed spires of the parliamentary chamber visible to the right. The overall colour of the reverse is a muted sage and pale green, with the central architectural vignette presented in deeper teal-green tones. To the upper left, a circular emblem featuring a small deer or kijang — the symbol of Bank Negara Malaysia — is enclosed within a fine-line circular border, printed in purple-lilac tones. The bank name “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” runs along the top of the reverse in dark lettering, with the denomination “$1000” appearing prominently to the upper right in dark green. Decorative floral motifs in soft pink and green appear along the lower left margin, while an intricate guilloché rosette pattern fills the upper right corner in lilac and green. Additional floral sprays in purple appear along the right edge. Fine wavy line patterns and scroll-work border the entire composition, and the printer’s inscription “GIESECKE & DEVRIENT” is visible in small text along the lower left, identifying the German security printing house responsible for the note’s production.
