1 Malaysian Ringgit (1st series)

£0.126339

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 1 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from the first series represents the earliest generation of Malaysia’s national currency following the formation of the country and the establishment of Bank Negara Malaysia as the issuing authority. These notes were issued during the early post-independence period and are now fully withdrawn from circulation, having been replaced by multiple later series with updated designs and security features.

The front of the banknote features a formal portrait of Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman, wearing traditional royal attire. The portrait is positioned to the right, reflecting the classic layout used on early Malaysian banknotes. The denomination “Satu Ringgit” is clearly printed in Malay at the centre, alongside the issuing authority name “Bank Negara Malaysia” at the top. Serial numbers appear in contrasting ink, and the overall colour scheme is dominated by blue tones with intricate guilloche patterns and fine line engraving typical of mid-20th-century banknote design.

The reverse of the note is more symbolic and decorative, featuring traditional geometric security patterns and a central emblem framed by ornate borders. A stylised animal motif appears within a circular medallion, reflecting regional artistic influences and cultural symbolism. The denomination “$1” is repeated in multiple positions, integrated into the background design to deter counterfeiting. The reverse design focuses on symmetry and pattern rather than portraiture, which was common for first-series issues.

First series Malaysian Ringgit banknotes were printed using traditional intaglio techniques and pre-date modern polymer substrates and advanced security elements. As a result, they are no longer accepted by banks for spending or deposit. Their age, historical significance, and withdrawn status mean they are now classed as non-circulating currency.
