1 Malaysian Ringgit (2nd series)

£0.126339

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 1 Malaysian Ringgit (2nd series) banknote was issued by Bank Negara Malaysia as part of the country’s second definitive banknote series, reflecting Malaysia’s post-independence identity and national symbolism. This series marked a clear evolution from the first series, with more intricate engraving, stronger cultural motifs, and enhanced visual complexity, while continuing to feature Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong as a unifying national figure.

On the front of the note, the design is dominated by a detailed engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, shown wearing traditional royal headgear. The portrait is framed by ornate geometric patterns inspired by Malay textiles and decorative arts. The denomination “Satu Ringgit” is prominently displayed in bold lettering at the centre, with the signature of the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia beneath. Fine guilloché work, interlaced line patterns, and ornamental flourishes fill the background, giving the note a dense, formal appearance typical of mid-20th-century banknote design. Serial numbering and the issuing authority text complete the composition.

The reverse of the banknote features a patriotic scene centred on the National Monument (Tugu Negara) in Kuala Lumpur, depicting soldiers raising the Malaysian flag in a sculptural composition that symbolises independence, unity, and sacrifice. The monument is set against a stylised landscape with surrounding architectural elements and decorative floral motifs. The denomination “$1” appears in multiple positions, integrated into complex patterned frames, while the emblem of Bank Negara Malaysia is enclosed within an ornate medallion. The background is filled with finely engraved textures and repeating line work, creating depth and visual security while reinforcing the ceremonial tone of the design.

The 2nd series 1 Ringgit note has long since been withdrawn from circulation following subsequent redesigns and currency updates in Malaysia. Today, these banknotes are no longer legal tender but remain widely collected and commonly submitted for exchange due to their historical significance and distinctive artwork.
