1 Malaysian Ringgit banknote (3rd series)
£0.126339
1 MYR = £0.126339
The 1 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s third series represents a clear transition toward more modern banknote design while retaining strong national symbolism. Issued by Bank Negara Malaysia, this series reflects advances in printing technology, enhanced security features, and a refined visual identity that marked Malaysia’s evolving currency system during the later 20th century.
On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved portrait of Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman, shown wearing traditional royal attire with detailed ceremonial headgear. The portrait is framed by intricate guilloché patterns and geometric motifs that serve both decorative and anti-counterfeiting purposes. The denomination “RM 1” is clearly displayed, alongside the Bank Negara Malaysia title, serial numbering, and the Governor’s signature. Subtle background patterns, layered inks, and precise line work give the note depth and texture typical of high-quality intaglio printing.
The reverse features a scenic Malaysian landscape combining natural and infrastructural elements. A stylised depiction of mountains, waterways, and engineered structures reflects national development and unity, themes commonly expressed across Malaysian banknote reverses of this era. The design incorporates fine line engraving, repeating security patterns, and symbolic motifs such as floral elements and national emblems. The layout balances open space with dense detailing, making the reverse visually distinct while maintaining harmony with the front.
Third series Malaysian Ringgit banknotes have since been withdrawn from circulation following later currency updates. As a result, they are no longer accepted by most banks or travel money bureau, but they remain widely encountered by collectors, travellers, and organisations holding older Malaysian currency.
