10 Malaysian Ringgit (1st series)

£1.263386

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 10 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from the first series was issued by Bank Negara Malaysia shortly after the formation of Malaysia and represents an important early chapter in the country’s independent monetary history. These notes are no longer in circulation and have since been replaced by later series, making them a common legacy banknote encountered by collectors and individuals sorting older currency holdings.

The front of the banknote features a detailed engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, wearing traditional ceremonial attire. The portrait is framed by intricate guilloché patterns and fine line engraving, designed to deter counterfeiting while showcasing the craftsmanship of early Malaysian note design. The denomination “SEPULUH RINGGIT” is clearly printed in Malay, along with the issuing authority “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA,” serial numbers, and official signatures.

The reverse of the note is dominated by highly decorative geometric and floral patterns, typical of the first Malaysian banknote series. At the centre is the Malayan coat of arms featuring the heraldic tiger, symbolising strength and national identity. Surrounding this are ornate radial designs and repeating motifs, with the value “$10” displayed prominently in each corner. The overall design reflects a blend of traditional symbolism and classic banknote engraving techniques of the period.

As a withdrawn banknote, the 10 Ringgit (1st series) is no longer accepted by banks for everyday use. However, it can still be exchanged through specialist currency services that handle non-circulating and historical banknotes from Malaysia.
