100 Malaysian Ringgit (1st series)

£12.633855

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 100 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from the first series represents one of the highest denominations issued during the early years of Malaysia’s national currency following the formation of Bank Negara Malaysia. These notes are now withdrawn from circulation and form part of Malaysia’s important monetary and political history, reflecting the country’s identity, governance, and artistic currency design of the period.

The front of the banknote features a detailed engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He is shown in ceremonial attire, including an ornate headdress, rendered in fine line engraving that gives depth and form to the portrait. The denomination “Seratus Ringgit” is prominently displayed in both words and numerals, with “Bank Negara Malaysia” printed across the top. Serial numbers appear on either side, and intricate guilloché patterns fill the background, providing both aesthetic balance and security against counterfeiting.

The reverse of the note is highly decorative and symmetrical in layout. At its centre is the Malaysian coat of arms emblem set within an elaborate geometric medallion. Two large circular security panels flank the emblem, framed by layered floral and arabesque patterns typical of first series Malaysian banknotes. The denomination “$100” is repeated in the corners, and the overall design uses a restrained colour palette that emphasises precision engraving and formal symmetry rather than pictorial scenes.

As Malaysia modernised its currency system, first series Ringgit banknotes were replaced by later issues with updated designs and enhanced security features. As a result, these notes are no longer accepted in everyday transactions but remain widely held by collectors, businesses, charities, and individuals who have retained legacy foreign currency over time.
