100 Malaysian Ringgit banknote (3rd series)

£12.633855

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 100 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s third series represents a key stage in the country’s modern currency design, combining advanced security features with imagery reflecting national development and technological progress. Issued by Bank Negara Malaysia, this series marked a clear visual shift toward contemporary themes while retaining strong cultural identity.

On the front of the banknote, the right-hand side features a detailed engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, wearing traditional ceremonial attire. The portrait is set against a complex background of geometric security patterns, colour-shifting elements, and pixelated motifs designed to deter counterfeiting. The denomination “100” appears prominently in multiple locations, alongside “Seratus Ringgit” in Malay. Serial numbers are printed in contrasting colours, and the design incorporates microtext, latent images, and patterned panels that change appearance under different lighting conditions.

The reverse of the note focuses on Malaysia’s industrial and technological development. The central design shows an industrial complex with detailed machinery and structural elements, symbolising engineering, manufacturing, and economic growth. Surrounding this are layered abstract patterns, curved lines, and floral-inspired motifs that are characteristic of the third series. The denomination “RM100” is clearly displayed, with additional security features integrated into the background design, including fine line engraving and colour gradients that are difficult to reproduce.

Although still relatively recent compared to earlier Malaysian series, third series banknotes are increasingly removed from everyday circulation as newer polymer and hybrid issues replace them. As a result, older paper issues such as this 100 Ringgit note are now commonly exchanged through specialist services rather than banks or travel money bureaus.
