100 Ringgit Ringgit (Issued 2011-2024)

Surviving examples of the 100 Ringgit note from the 2012–2022 series remain in active circulation across Malaysia, though high-denomination notes of this type are frequently withdrawn from everyday use as they pass through the banking system and are replaced with fresher issues. Notes that have left Malaysia in the hands of travellers, expatriates, or returning holidaymakers represent a significant portion of the examples now appearing in the United Kingdom. The combination of striking design, landmark imagery, and the practical reality that many holders are simply unaware they can exchange such notes abroad has drawn both currency historians and everyday consumers to seek reliable exchange services. Bank Negara Malaysia’s careful stewardship of this series makes it one of the most recognisable high-value notes in Southeast Asian currency history.

On the front, the note is dominated by a portrait of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, the thirteenth and fifteenth King of Malaysia, rendered in fine intaglio engraving to the right-hand side of the note. He is depicted wearing the traditional royal songkok headress adorned with decorative gold ornamentation, and his formal attire reflects the ceremonial gravitas appropriate to the nation’s constitutional monarch. The portrait is executed with precise line engraving that gives the face strong three-dimensional depth, with subtle shading across the cheekbones and the folds of his ceremonial dress. The overall colour palette of the front is a composed blend of violet, blue, and purple tones, with the denomination numeral “100” appearing in large, bold dark-blue print at the centre-lower portion of the note. To the left of the denomination numeral, a vibrant red hibiscus flower — Malaysia’s national flower — is depicted in full colour, its petals rendered in warm coral and crimson against green foliage, providing a striking contrast to the cool blue tones surrounding it. The issuing authority name “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” is printed prominently in blue capital letters across the upper portion of the note. To the upper right, the denomination is shown as “RM 100” in clear serif typography. A security strip is embedded vertically through the left-centre of the note, visible as a series of dark rectangular windows running top to bottom. The text “GABENOR” appears beneath the Governor’s signature, which is printed in dark ink just below the central denomination numeral, and the Malay-language legal tender declaration “WANG KERTAS INI SAH DIPERLAKUKAN DENGAN NILAI” is printed in small text beneath the signature line. Guilloché patterning fills the background of the note in intricate geometric latticework, and a ghost watermark area to the left allows light to pass through the security paper. The numeral “100” also appears in smaller form at the upper-left corner in a lighter violet tone.

The reverse of the note is rendered predominantly in shades of violet and purple, with the central vignette depicting a dramatic landscape of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah — the highest peak in Malaysia and one of the most iconic natural landmarks in all of Southeast Asia. The mountain is engraved with considerable topographic detail, showing the jagged granite pinnacles of the Low’s Peak summit rising against a clear sky, with the lower slopes and surrounding rock formations rendered in fine hatching that conveys texture and altitude. The foreground of the vignette shows the distinctive Kinabalu limestone pinnacles — sharp, vertical rock spires — rendered in a reddish-brown engraving tone that contrasts with the cooler violet-purple of the mountain itself. The serial number “AA0015115” is printed in dark ink at the upper-centre of the reverse, with a further vertical repetition of the same serial number printed along the left margin. A circular emblem in green appears at the upper-left, consistent with the Bank Negara Malaysia logo. The text “بڠك نڬارا مليسيا” — Bank Negara Malaysia rendered in Jawi script — is printed in dark ink across the upper portion of the reverse, and “رڠڬيت مليسيا” — Ringgit Malaysia in Jawi — appears along the lower-right margin. The denomination numeral “100” is displayed in bold print at the lower-centre of the reverse vignette. The right-hand edge of the note carries a decorative panel of repeating geometric motifs in purple, consistent with the security patterning used throughout this series.
