1000 Malaysian Ringgit (1st series)

£126.338550

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 1000 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from the first series is the highest denomination issued by Bank Negara Malaysia and is one of the most visually and historically significant notes of Malaysia’s early post-independence currency. Introduced in the late 1960s, this large-format banknote was designed for high-value transactions and institutional use, reflecting the economic ambitions of a newly established nation. It has since been withdrawn from circulation and is no longer accepted as legal tender.

The front of the banknote features a finely engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He is depicted wearing traditional royal attire, including a detailed tengkolok, with meticulous line engraving that captures facial expression, fabric folds, and ceremonial ornamentation. The denomination “SERIBU RINGGIT” is centrally displayed, framed by complex guilloché patterns and floral scrollwork that provide both decoration and security. “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” appears prominently along the upper margin, while serial numbers are positioned symmetrically, reinforcing balance and formality. The restrained colour palette of purples and greys gives the note a dignified, authoritative appearance appropriate to its value.

The reverse showcases an architectural scene centred on the original Bank Negara Malaysia headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. A tall central tower dominates the composition, flanked by modernist buildings that symbolise national progress, governance, and financial stability. In the foreground, landscaped grounds, a curving access road, and a bridge crossing a water feature add depth and perspective. To the left, the national emblem featuring the barking deer (kancil) is set within an ornamental frame, reinforcing Malaysia’s national identity. The engraving on the reverse is precise and layered, combining architectural accuracy with decorative borders typical of high-value banknotes from this era.

As Malaysia modernised its currency system, first series banknotes—including the 1000 Ringgit—were withdrawn and replaced by later issues with updated designs and security features. Today, these notes are primarily encountered as legacy holdings, collections, or reserves held by individuals, businesses, and organisations.
