5 Malaysian Ringgit (2nd series)

£0.631693

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 5 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s second series represents a key stage in the development of the country’s post-independence currency, reflecting both national identity and refined security printing techniques of its era. Issued by Bank Negara Malaysia, this series followed the first-generation notes and introduced more elaborate engraving, stronger symbolism, and a more confident visual language aligned with Malaysia’s growing international presence.

The front of the banknote features a finely engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He is shown wearing traditional ceremonial attire, including an ornately patterned headdress, rendered with dense linework and detailed shading that highlights the craftsmanship of the engraving. Surrounding the portrait are complex guilloché patterns, geometric motifs, and floral-inspired security designs. The denomination “LIMA RINGGIT” is prominently displayed at the centre, accompanied by the Governor’s signature, serial numbers, and the official “Bank Negara Malaysia” title across the upper margin. The colour palette is dominated by green and teal tones, with layered patterns that add depth and help deter counterfeiting.

The reverse of the note depicts Istana Negara, the former National Palace of Malaysia, presented in a balanced architectural composition. The palace is shown with its domed roofs, symmetrical façade, and landscaped surroundings, engraved in fine detail that captures both structure and texture. Decorative elements frame the scene, including floral designs and repeating geometric borders, while the denomination “$5” appears in the corners. A stylised national emblem motif is incorporated into the design, reinforcing the note’s official status and cultural significance.

Today, 2nd series Malaysian Ringgit banknotes are no longer in active circulation, having been replaced by later series with updated designs and security features. As a result, they are now considered withdrawn currency and are typically not accepted by banks or travel money bureau. However, they remain of interest to collectors and can still be exchanged through specialist currency services.
