5 Malaysian Ringgit banknote (4th series)

£0.734906

1 MYR = £0.146981

The 5 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s fourth series forms part of the modern polymer-era designs introduced by Bank Negara Malaysia to improve durability, security, and visual storytelling. This series reflects Malaysia’s natural heritage and cultural identity through detailed illustrations, advanced security elements, and a distinctive vertical–horizontal layout combination.

On the reverse of the note, the design features a striking natural scene dominated by hornbills perched on branches within a lush rainforest environment. The birds are rendered in fine engraved detail, with carefully shaded feathers and prominent curved beaks, symbolising Malaysia’s biodiversity. Surrounding this central vignette are geometric background patterns, microtext, and a clear denomination marker “RM 5”. A transparent security window is integrated into the polymer substrate, containing layered motifs that shift in tone under light, alongside tactile elements designed to assist with authentication.

The obverse presents a formal engraved portrait of Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman, positioned on the right-hand side of the note. His ceremonial attire is intricately detailed, with fine linework emphasising texture and depth. To the left, a hibiscus flower (Bunga Raya), Malaysia’s national flower, is shown in full bloom, adding a strong national symbol to the composition. The denomination “5” appears prominently, accompanied by the governor’s signature, serial numbers, latent images, and repeating security patterns that run across the background. The colour palette of layered greens reinforces the denomination while helping to distinguish it from other values in the series.

Although still familiar to many, earlier fourth-series Malaysian Ringgit notes are increasingly replaced in circulation by later issues. As a result, they are commonly presented for exchange, particularly by collectors, travellers, and organisations holding older stock.
