50 Malaysian Ringgit (1st series)

£6.316928

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 50 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s first banknote series was issued by Bank Negara Malaysia during the early years following the formation of the modern Malaysian currency system. This series represents an important transitional period in Malaysia’s monetary history, reflecting national identity, sovereignty, and early central banking design standards before later series introduced more advanced security features and modernised artwork.

On the front of the banknote, the design is dominated by a formal engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He is shown wearing traditional ceremonial attire, rendered in fine line engraving typical of mid-20th-century banknote production. The denomination “LIMA PULUH RINGGIT” is clearly displayed in Malay, alongside the issuing authority “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA.” Serial numbers appear on both sides of the note, and the overall colour palette is restrained and dignified, using shades of blue-grey that emphasise formality and stability. Decorative guilloché patterns fill the background, providing both visual depth and protection against counterfeiting.

The reverse of the banknote features an intricate ornamental layout centred on Malaysia’s national coat of arms, incorporating the heraldic tiger emblem within a shield. Surrounding this are symmetrical geometric and floral security patterns, including large rosette-style designs and finely detailed circular motifs. The denomination “$50” is repeated in each corner, balanced by elaborate line work that showcases the craftsmanship of early Malaysian banknote engraving. The reverse design focuses less on portraiture and more on symbolic authority, national identity, and ornamental complexity.

As a first series issue, this 50 Ringgit note has long since been withdrawn from circulation and is no longer accepted by high street banks. Its historical status, combined with its larger denomination, means it is commonly encountered today through estates, long-term savings, collectors, and institutional holdings rather than everyday use.
