50 Malaysian Ringgit (2nd series)

£6.316928

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 50 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s second series forms part of a major redesign introduced by Bank Negara Malaysia during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This series modernised the visual identity of the Ringgit while retaining strong national symbolism, traditional decorative motifs, and advanced intaglio printing techniques. Today, second series notes are withdrawn from circulation and are primarily encountered through collections, estates, charities, and business holdings.

The front of the 50 Ringgit note features a detailed engraved portrait of Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman, shown wearing ceremonial royal attire. The portrait is framed by intricate guilloché patterns, floral motifs, and layered geometric linework that reflects traditional Malay design. The denomination “LIMA PULUH RINGGIT” is clearly displayed in Malay, alongside the numeral “50” in the corners. Fine line engraving, complex background textures, and a visible serial number enhance both security and visual depth, while the Bank Negara Malaysia name appears prominently across the upper margin.

The reverse of the banknote depicts Istana Negara, the former National Palace of Malaysia, rendered in precise architectural detail. The palace is shown with its distinctive domes and symmetrical façade, surrounded by ornamental scrollwork and floral elements that balance the composition. The denomination “50” appears again in multiple positions, integrated into the surrounding decorative framework. Subtle colour blending, layered inks, and detailed line shading highlight the craftsmanship associated with Malaysia’s second series banknote production.

Second series Malaysian Ringgit banknotes were gradually replaced by later series with updated security features and materials. As a result, the 50 Ringgit note is no longer accepted by banks or travel money bureau services. Despite this, it still carries exchange value and is commonly submitted for conversion by individuals, charities, and organisations handling legacy foreign currency.
